Degree

Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) degree, awarded from the Grenoble Ecole de Management.

The Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is a terminal degree in business administration. Academically, the DBA is awarded based on advanced study, examinations, project work, and advanced research in the field of business administration.

The Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) degree from Grenoble Ecole de Management is recognized internationally for high academic standards, publication rates, and its AACSB and AMBA accreditation.

Phases

The program is organized into two phases.  It has a strong emphasis on Research Methodology, and it allows students to tailor the program to their specific interests and career goals.

Phase I: Philosophy, Methods, and Tools

~16 months, part-time study

DBA students start by learning methods and techniques for research design, data collection, and data analysis to conduct, analyze, author, and publish research that meets doctoral standards.

It starts with several research training seminars and workshops that are held either online, in France (Grenoble and Paris), or in Geneva (at HEG-Genève). The deliverable after each seminar is a written document meeting the milestones of the DBA program requirements:

  • Research Proposal (after seminar 1, approx. 2000 words),
  • Literature Review (after seminar 2, approx. 10000 words),
  • Dissertation Proposal (after seminar 3, approx. 15000 words)

Between those seminars, students work under the supervision of their doctoral advisor(s) and regularly produce documents to show for their progress.

The Dissertation Proposal is subject to an oral defense before a panel, to lead to the awarding of the Certificate in Research in Management Sciences. The certificate is a pre-requisite for entry into Phase II.

Phase II: Dissertation

~20 months, part-time study

DBA students research and develop their thesis during Phase II. It consists mainly of individual research under the supervision of a faculty member, from GEM or HEG-Genève, with expertise in the relevant discipline of management.

Expectations include the collection and analysis of data under a formal academic methodology. Data collection and analysis will lead to the presentation of results, and the production of a final dissertation document in preparation for the final oral defense.

The DBA dissertation should provide substantial evidence of original scholarship that meets requisite doctoral and publication-quality standards.

Specializations

DBA students have the opportunity to choose one of three specialization tracks, in Phase II:

  • Sustainability
  • Managing Technology and Innovation
  • Managing and Leading People

The specializations are an opportunity to expand the knowledge in student’s research topic but are not required to be aligned with this topic.

The specializations consist of a series of eight webinars during year 3 of the program, at the end of which students will work in small groups on an additional conference paper.

Testimonials

I undertook my DBA from Grenoble EM and Sant'Anna di Pisa (joint cohort) because I wanted to dig deeper into how people interact across cultures. For me a PhD would have been too far from concrete applications, whilst a DBA contains an "implications for business" part which fully suited my purpose. Once admitted, the first step was to sharpen my research, which I wanted to center around Cultural Ignorance. Being in a mixed cohort with 14 other people from 4 different continents was extremely helpful to maintain sharp focus and get me through the research, and new friendships were born (and are still vibrantly alive). I also had a constant support from my supervisors and from the DBA program directors.

Doctoral research is hard work: it takes time, effort, some talent and lots of determination. Grenoble EM is well equipped to get students through the process, thanks to their excellent faculty and staff, who provide constant support. I managed to successfully finish my thesis on "Cultural Ignorance: the Dark sides of Cultural Intelligence" thanks to the combination of all the above factors.

The DBA studies made me also enter another dimension: teaching at executive levels. I had been doing quite some university level teachings before undertaking the doctoral studies, but my studies also worked as an "upgrade" - I was now asked to teach to MBA and EMBA students in Switzerland and abroad. This has now become a regular request.

Today, I am part of the Grenoble EM alumni network, and also the academic community. My day job is - as it has been throughout my whole career - all about making people thrive in their jobs and helping companies choose their talent well. The DBA study gave me depth and a stronger methodology for my work, and also a worldwide network of academics that I can reach out to for specific needs, in order to enhance my knowledge and effectiveness in my activities.

Doctoral degrees are the highest academic level you can get to and it can be as tough as the Everest at times. My advice to potential DBA students is : be sure to have the time and the support from your families and employer, be sure to have the determination and stamina to pull through your academic effort over many years, and finally: listen well to your supervisor's advice in the starting phases, so that you save time and rework when it really gets going!

Best wishes!
