Studying abroad
The HEG-Genève has more than 170 partners in nearly 40 different countries.
From your third semester of study at the HEG-Genève, you have the possibility to join a similar programme in one of our partner universities for one or two semesters.
In addition, students in Business Information Systems can also join a Business Management programme in our partner universities for one semester.
Practical informations
You have been selected for a one-semester or one-year exchange abroad.
Although your host university is now your main contact for all matters related to accommodation or the organization of your stay abroad, here are a number of things to consider and arrange before leaving:
Visa
If you are a Swiss citizen, no visa is needed to study in the member states of the EU-27/EFTA. However, you must have a valid passport or ID card.
If you do not hold a Swiss passport (citizenship), please contact the nearest diplomatic or consular representation in Switzerland of the country you plan on going to.
If you are going to study in a country out of the European Union, you may need to apply for a visa. Different countries have different requirements so make sure to contact the nearest embassy or consulate of the country you plan on going to in order to receive information about application requirements.
Visa applications are not free and the process can take several months, so make sure you apply well in advance!
Finally, don't forget to check that your passport has not expired and that it won't expire within 6 months of your intended return to Switzerland.
Health insurance
Before leaving, check with your home insurer whether you are sufficiently covered for health and accident care abroad. You may buy an additional health coverage for the duration of your stay. Don't forget to get your insurance certificate because you may have to submit it to your host university.
Grants
However you remain enrolled at the HEG-Geneva and pay the Geneva-semester tax. This financial aid covers only expenses such as meals, transportation, textbooks and housing. The student office of HEG-Geneva is in charge of the financial aid request at the UAS where the funds come from.
There are many benefits acquired from studying abroad:
- The discovery of a new culture and new customs,
- The improvement of linguistic skills,
- The compatibility of the diploma obtained with all signatory countries of the Bologna Agreements,
- The diversity of courses,
- An original profile as companies favor varied educational experiences.
If one or two semesters of study abroad interest you and if you meet the qualifications, do not hesitate to sign up!
Procedures & destinations
Choose your destination
You want to participate in an exchange programme or earn a double degree but you don't know which university to choose?
European Union, Asia, Australia, America: all these destinations sound amazing...Take the necessary time to prepare your exchange semester or year. The information below will help you make your decision!
- Check our national and international mobility guide where you will find the complete list of our partner universities, the corresponding fields of study, taught languages and number of spots available each semester.
- Read the information sheets of the HEG partner institutions.
- Check the final reports/feedback (only in French) of the HEG students who have done an exchange at the host institutions you are interested in.
- Attend the exchange information session held at the beginning of each semester.
- Stop by our Mobility Desk (B1.04) open on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 12pm and on Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm, if you wish to get additional information on exchange options..
How to apply
You have made up your mind and you have gathered all the necessary information on the universities that are of interest to you.
Here are the six steps you have to follow in order to apply:
1. Read carefully our application requirements before submitting your materials.
You must have successfully completed two semesters of study at the HEG (60 ECTS)
If you are attending the IBM program, the EE full-time program or the "Banque et Finance" orientation, make sure to read the special requirements applying to you.
If you are attending the Business Information Systems program, you are allowed to go on a one-semester exchange at a partner university offering courses in the Business Administration area. If you wish to leave for a full academic year, you will have to choose a university with which the HEG has an agreement specifically in your field of study.
2. Make sure to meet our application deadlines
Applications can only be submitted during the application period of the semester right before your exchange. We do not reserve spots in advance, it is thus useless to send your application materials before the official period.
- For the Fall semester 2025 or the full academic year 2025-26, the application period will run from Monday February 17th to Monday March 17th, 2025.
- For the Spring semester 2026, the application period will run from Monday September 1st to Monday October 6th, 2025.
Be aware that nomination deadlines vary from one university to the other: please check the non-exhaustive list of partners who may have specific deadlines. We suggest to check by yourself the nomination deadline of the universities of your interest even if they do not appear in the list and to let us know if you find nomination deadlines which expire before our deadline (please check the "nomination deadline" and not the "application deadline").
Some universities may also require that you take a language test. Should it be the case, make sure to obtain the required certificates in advance.
3. Prepare and submit your application materials to our Mobility Desk (B1.05)
Only complete applications, personally handed at the international relations desk, will be considered.
The application must include:
- Our HEG application form dully filled in by computer and including 3 destinations.
- Our Mobility Charter duly filled in and signed
- A cover letter per destination addressed to the HEG to help us make a better selection between candidates and evaluate your motivation (max. 1 page per letter, in French or English)
- Your last official transcript of records or your last grade report from AGE/IS-Academia
- A curriculum vitae, in French or in English
- A copy of your passport (ID card not accepted)
We ask you to scan the 2 first documents (Application form et Mobility Chart) and to forward them by mail to us in PDF after personal application submission.
A selection takes place if the number of applicants is greater than the number of available spots at the host university. Do not contact or apply directly to any partner university before you have officially been selected by the HEG.
Once the spots have been assigned, you will receive a confirmation email with further instructions in order to complete your application.
4. Follow the application instructions provided by your host university
If you are accepted by the HEG for one of the universities you have chosen, we will send an official nomination to the partner university which will then provide you directly with additional information on the materials that they may require to confirm your admission. For all details regarding accommodation, visa issues, offer of courses, please contact directly your host university.
5. Fill out our Learning Agreement with the list of classes offered by the host university you were selected for.
6. Fill out and sign the scholarship certificate which we will prepare for you
You can now start organizing your stay: budget, housing and travel reservations!
For an exchange with BCI (Bureau de coopération interuniversitaire)
BCI is an organization that gathers all Quebec universities.
Deadline: application to be send to the HES-SO in Delémont by February 9th, for departure in September.
Summer school
You want to travel, learn a new language or just improve your knowledge in certain fields?
Summer school programs are made for you!
Summer school programs are courses organized by certain universities during the summer. They last a short period of time, which can vary from one institution to another.
The HEG is not responsible for these programs and should you be interested in one of them, please feel free to register.
Costs vary from one university to another, and are at your own expense. We do not offer any grant for these classes.
ECTS credits obtained during these classes are unfortunately not taken into account in your curriculum at the HEG.
We give you possible destinations that offer these kind of experiences and leave you the choice to participate or not.
Other documents that are not available on our pages can be requested at the International relations’ office (Building B, Office B1.05, open Mon-Wed-Thu-Fri 10h-12h, Tue 14h-16h).
